average monthly concentrations at Mauna Loa and in Košetice
Global CO2 concentrations are long-term monitored at the Manua Loa volcano in Hawaii. Due to the remoteness of this location in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, these values are representative of the global background concentrations at our planet.
As the line chart above shows, CO2 concentrations have been rising steadily since measurements began 1958. While in March 1958 the average monthly concentration was 315.7 ppm, by May 2022 it was already 421.0 ppm.
CO2 concentrations show a certain regular annual pattern, which is mainly related to the role of vegetation in the carbon cycle.
For comparison, the graph on the right also shows the values of CO2 concentrations measured at the tower of the atmospheric station Křešín u Pacova, in the area of the Košetice Observatory. These are values measured at the top of the tower, i.e. at a height of 250 m above the ground. As in the case of the Mauna Loa data, there is a clear increasing trend and annual course of CO2 concentrations. In absolute terms, concentrations are slightly higher than in Hawaii.
